Who  Are Sydney Marae Alliance?

The members of the Sydney Marae Alliance carry the dreams and aspirations of the many before us.  For more than 30 years, groups & whanau have fundraised for a Cultural Centre in Sydney.

Sydney Marae Alliance (SMA) was established in 2015 as the result of the merging of three community organisations Sydney Marae Incorporated, Te Aranganui and Nga Uri o Rahiri.  The ‘Alliance’ of our groups unified a team to work with a single vision of establishing a Cultural Centre in Sydney.

Sydney Marae Alliance is a registered not-for-profit charity operating within the guidelines of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Governed by a practicing Board which is primarily tasked with establishing a clear pathway, delivery and execution for a cultural centre project to support the needs of the Maori community in Australia.

Vision and Purpose

It is estimated that a 6th of the Global Māori population live in Australia.  More than  60,000 people reside in NSW and identify as Māori.

Our principal goal is to provide a cultural space and place that allows us to practise Māori traditions, tikanga and ceremonies..   It is our vision that our reanga (next generation) will be able to leverage from the cultural hub to learn our language, access kapa haka, be recipients of cultural knowledge passed down from our elders.  This will assist in preserving, maintaining and continuing to develop our Māori culture.

Connection With The Tangata Whenua

Sydney Marae Alliance acknowledge the Darug people, as the original caretakers of this land, the waterways and the environment. The support and engagement we have had with the Indigenous groups through the process of planning for this project has enabled us to feel confident that we can grow and develop our cultures together – side by side in partnership. We acknowledge all the Indigenous cultural leaders, the caretakers, the dancers, the artists, the totems, the story tellers and the Indigenous caretakers of the future.

Our Objectives

  • Enhancing Place Identity and Cultural Origins

To create a cultural centre which houses programmes and events that focus on retaining and amplifying a strong sense of place, origin, distinct identities, local and international stories, cultural assets and creative energy.  The cultural centre will be a landing pad for our people locally and a gateway for Māori to connect with their Iwi and Marae in Aotearoa.

  • Recognising Cumberland's First Peoples' Living Culture

We acknowledge that Māori have a long history in Australia and we are manuhiri (guests) on this country.  We pay respect to the Tangata Whenua, the First Nation People of this land.  Our people and this project are committed to partnering with Darug in the promotion of the history and contemporary cultures through the use of the facility for educational and cultural activities.

  • Celebrating Strength In Diversity

Our culture is diverse, our tribal affiliations are diverse, our language and tikanga practises are diverse.  As a pan tribal cultural centre, we will have the ability to cater for all our iwi and hapu so that we may share these taonga with our tamariki and mokopuna.

  • Supporting Cultural Groups and Individuals

He tangata ke koutou, he tangata ke matou, i roto I tenei whare, tatou tatou e.

You are different, we are different, but within this house we are all united.

This cultural centre will support the growth and wellbeing of our whanau (family), hāpori (community) and individual.  We welcome Māori and non Māori to participate in culture, sport and the arts.
